Meet Our Coaches

Marc Burkom - 2015 Boys
US Soccer Coach Educator, US Soccer B License
Soccer Background
I started playing soccer when I was 7 years old and continued through recreational soccer, high school soccer, and intramural soccer in college. As soon as I started college I began coaching. In addition to coaching players I also help develop coaches for Maryland State Youth Soccer and US Soccer.
Why do you love soccer?
I love that soccer is very simple and very complex at the same time. The objectives and the rules are simple, but the tactics and the games are very complex. There's nothing better than watching a team of soccer players working together to solve problems on the field.
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
I enjoy seeing how children grow as both players and people week by week, season by season, year by year. As coaches we can make an incredible difference in the lives of our players by empowering and supporting them on and off the field!
What makes Elkridge United special?
Elkridge United's volunteers, who dedicate so much time to the kids in our community while asking for nothing in return, are amazing. The focus on players having fun and working together without placing a financial burden on families make Elkridge United a very special club.

Soccer has been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember, starting out playing on an army base in Germany in kindergarten. Through the years, I played on my SAC neighborhood team in elementary school, competed for SAC travel, Maryland ODP, and Oakland Mills High as I got older, and eventually made it to the D1 soccer field at Davidson College. You can still catch me out on the soccer field playing adult rec soccer these days! I worked as a soccer camp counselor in my HS years and first became a rec soccer coach in 2014. Since that time, I've consistently led multiple teams each season at both the rec and travel levels.
Why do you love soccer?
For me, soccer has always been a sport I enjoy playing, helping me to feel confidence and a sense of accomplishment. I also am thankful for the connections to others through soccer, counting some of my best friends as former teammates and my former coaches as role models in my life. Even more there are the family connections through soccer, whether watching Germany win the 1990 World Cup on the couch with my dad or currently sharing the joy of watching soccer together with my own kids. The passion and joy that I feel either watching, playing, or coaching soccer continue to be a positive part of my life.
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
My favorite thing about coaching is seeing the growth and development of the players. I am always amazed at the end of a season when I'm able to reflect back on how far they have all come. And even more, I love to see the joy and fun they are having on the field and the connections they make with their teammates, I feel very lucky to be able to give some of what makes soccer special to me to others.
What makes Elkridge United special?
Elkridge United is special because it is truly focused on the players, the community, and developing that life-long love of soccer. To me, Elkridge United really feels like a family and I'm very proud of all we do to provide a positive soccer experience for so many players.

I played as a youth through college. I started coaching around 2017 and have been with Elkridge United since day 1. I also started playing again a few years ago after many years off.
Why do you love soccer?
Constant action and activity. The team focus. The skill development and improvement you get to witness as a coach. Anyone can play regardless of their background and resources, and the global nature of the game.
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
Watching the kids have fun, bond, and improve in skill and confidence (on and off the field). Watching a group of strangers become friends.
What makes Elkridge United special?
It feels like a family.

You can find a fellow soccer player almost anywhere in the world!
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
I love being a part of helping young people discover and develop their strengths and joys, both on and off the field.

I began playing soccer at the age 4, joined a travel team by age 9, and played 4 years of varsity high school soccer player. I also played in futsal nationals, played in international club tournaments in Europe, and played college soccer. I currently hold the Grassroots coaching license from US soccer.
Why do you love soccer?
As I kid I loved the competition that soccer brought, but also the friendships, training and working to become better, both as an individual and as a team. Now I enjoy the challenge of developing players into the best that they can be.
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
My favorite thing about coaching is watching the growth of our players and team. Identifying key areas that need to developed and building training sessions to support our goals.
What makes Elkridge United special?
Elkridge United is special because of the passionate people that are involved to make us an organization. I feel that without the other dedicated volunteers (coaches, managers, field coordinators, etc.) that strive to make the best soccer experience possible at a low cost to entry, we are just another club.

I have been fortunate to be able to play soccer my entire life - from recreation level at a very young age to travel teams, NY ODP through High School, 4 years for a national ranked Collegiate team, and then Maryland Majors elite amateur league - and currently play on Adult recreational level teams in the MD area. I have also had the privilege to Coach various age level groups between 4 years old thru Varsity High School over the past 25+ years.
Why do you love soccer?
Whether playing or as a Coach, being on the pitch or sideline: experiencing the various levels of individual talent that come together to perform as a unified group, developing mental and physical toughness, playing the game with friends...... and of course the all impressive finger tip saves, or hitting a 30-yard net ripper -- never gets old!
What is your favorite thing about coaching?
Finding unique ways to develop players skill sets both individually and as a group in sport and life, and then being able to observe and compliment them in their progress.
What makes Elkridge United special?
We have a common goal of moving forward together, which will prove to be successful.
